The use of personal checks in Vancouver and elsewhere is on the decline. More and more people are choosing to use credit cards, mobile payment systems or other forms of payment, and more and more businesses are deciding they don't want the hassle and risk of dealing with taking checks. However, there still is a place for personal checks in today's world, even if the role they play is shrinking.
There are still some businesses, especially small mom and pop operations, that don't take credit cards because of the expense involved. The vast majority of these businesses do take checks because it is inconvenient to customers to only allow cash as a form of payment.
Personal checks in Vancouver also continue to be a well-used form of payment for sending bill payments through the mail. Many people, especially those who are older, prefer this method of payment because they don't trust doing financial tasks over the Internet or by phone. Though many businesses and financial institutions are doing things to slowly end this practice, it likely is here to stay on some level for decades to come.
There are a number of other uses for personal checks, with an emphasis on the "personal." Many people like to use checks to pay for things such as charitable donations, gifts to relatives and other more personal interactions.
This is so there is a record of the payment.
While checks are not as important or as used as they used to be, they still play an important role and will be around for a while.
